The Big Ten Conference had made big news the last two days. On Monday (Nov. 19), Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany was in College Park, Md., to announce the University of Maryland as the league's 13th member, then today (Nov. 20), he was in Piscataway, N.J., announcing Rutgers University as the 14th member to the historic conference.

See what University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas had to say about the addition of the two East Coast institutions.

Thomas on Maryland joining the Big Ten:
"Today's announcement of Maryland joining the Big Ten Conference is very exciting on many fronts, including the addition of another highly regarded institution that stretches our conference footprint further east. Maryland fits the Big Ten profile as an outstanding academic institution and has an long and successful history in athletics. We look forward to competing against the Terrapins beginning in the 2014-15 season. This move is another example of the Big Ten being a leader in the current climate of collegiate athletics."

Thomas on Rutgers joining the Big Ten
"The addition of Rutgers to the Big Ten Conference is a great complement to the news yesterday. Rutgers is an outstanding academic institution that fits very well with the rest of the Big Ten, and brings some very competitive programs to the conference. The very first college football game was played on the Rutgers campus, adding to the historic traditions in the Big Ten. This has been a very exciting week in the Big Ten as Commissioner Delany and the leadership of the Big Ten institutions continue to be extremely forward thinking."
