CHAMPAIGN, IL - University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas announced Thursday that veteran fundraiser Zach Goines has joined the Fighting Illini staff as Director of Development/Chicago Operations.

"Zach Goines brings a great deal of experience and success to the I FUND staff as he directs our Chicago operations," Thomas said. "Zach has served as a development director at three major institutions prior to coming to Illinois, and has extensive experience working in the Chicagoland area. He will play a big role as we continue to bring more Illini events and enhanced exposure to the Chicago area."

Rick Darnell, senior associate athletics director/development, completes his athletics development team with the addition of Goines.

"Zach is a talented athletic development professional who has helped accomplish significant results at four major universities over the past seven years while working with customers in the Midwest, in Illinois and, specifically, in Chicago," Darnell said. "As a successful manager, Zach will be joining a talented and dynamic Illinois staff in our Chicago office, and his talents and experience with annual funds, major gifts and capital campaigns will be an asset to the University of Illinois and our athletic development team. Zach is excited about growing our customer base in Chicago, which will be our main focus, and he and his team will be serving our customers across northern Illinois."

Goines began his career as a fundraiser at the University of Miami as a development associate and assistant director of development from 2001-04. His next position was at Marquette, where he served as director of the Blue & Gold Fund from 2004-07. In 2007, Goines moved to Iowa State, where he served as director of development for athletics until 2011. He spent the 2011-12 school year at Connecticut as senior director of development for athletics, where he led and oversaw the UConn athletics development staff, including annual fundraising, major gifts, events and operations.

"I am incredibly excited to be joining the Fighting Illini family," Goines said. "The opportunity to be part of such a prestigious university with such a deep and rich tradition of athletics excellence is an honor for me. I am thrilled to have the chance to work with a group of nationally respected athletics administrators, and I am very eager to join a great athletics development team.

"I am looking forward to living and working in the Chicagoland area, which is a city and region that I have great fondness for. I am extremely excited to start working with the many loyal and ardent Illini fans and supporters throughout greater Chicago and northern Illinois who are invested in moving Fighting Illini athletics to the top of the Big Ten and the NCAA."

A native of Kettering, Ohio, Goines graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance from Kentucky in 1999 and earned a master's degree in sports administration from Indiana in 2000. While at Kentucky, he served the Wildcat basketball team as head student manager from 1995-99. He followed that with a graduate assistantship in the Indiana athletic ticket office during the 1999-2000 school year.

Goines will begin at Illinois on Dec. 3.
