Four student-athletes volunteer on a monthly basis as a book mentor for the Head Start program. Kelly Kunkel and Alyssa Petruzello from Swimming and Diving and Tim Kopinski and Farris Gosea from Men's Tennis volunteered on a monthly basis as a book mentor with the program in Champaign and Savoy. The student-athletes read the book of the month to their class and do an activity related to the book with the children. At the end each child received a copy of the book for their home library. This event was held in conjunction with Hometown Heroes.
Hometown Heroes is a community outreach program that provides our student-athletes with opportunities to interact with youth from Champaign County while spreading an anti-drug, anti-gang and pro-Illini message. This program enables our student-athletes to develop their speaking skills while impacting the lives of others as they serve as role models for the youth of our community.
