Jan. 14, 2013
University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas announced Monday a pair of promotions in the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics administrative staff, with Jason Heggemeyer and Kent Brown being elevated to associate athletics directors.
Heggemeyer has served as assistant athletics director for ticketing since 2005, responsible for the supervision and strategic planning for all ticket office operations. Heggemeyer will continue to oversee the ticket office and help drive football and basketball ticket sales in his role as associate athletics director for ticket operations and sales.
Brown has a total of 22 years of DIA experience and has served as assistant athletics director for media relations since 2000. He is the athletic department spokesman, co-football media relation contact and is responsible for the supervision of the athletics communications staff. Brown will continue those duties as associate athletics director for media relations.
"Jason and Kent have done an outstanding job leading their departments and I'm pleased to recognize their efforts by elevating their titles," Thomas said. "Jason's leadership and expertise has been exceptional during the implementation of the bar code system at Illini football and basketball games, and in restructuring the Assembly Hall and Illini Athletics ticket offices into one coordinated unit. Kent has a tremendous reputation with media at the local, regional and national levels and does a great job prioritizing the communication strategies of the DIA while serving the needs of our media."
In addition, director of sports medicine Paul Schmidt announced the hiring of Toby Harkins as head football athletic trainer. Harkins comes to Illinois after serving the past three seasons as associate head athletic trainer for football at Marshall University. While there, he also served as an approved clinical instructor in the Marshall athletic training education program.
Prior to arriving in Huntington, W. Va., Harkins was the head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director at Charleston Southern University from 2005-10 after holding the same position at Erskine College from 1998-2005. During his tenure at Erskine, he also was an assistant professor in the athletic training education program.
A native of Simpsonville, S.C., Harkins earned a bachelor's degree in sport management from Erskine College and a master's degree in health and exercise science from Furman University. He and his wife, Kelly, have a son, Sully, and daughter, Paisley.
