CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois launched a statewide public service announcement campaign called "Tough Enough, Smart Enough" on Oct. 27, 2010. In the months that have followed, 87 media outlets across the Land of Lincoln have joined in the campaign.
Television partners include national stations WGN and the Big Ten Network, as well as NBC 5 Chicago. Notable among the 55 radio partners participating in the project are WGN 720AM in Chicago, WSCR "The Score" 670AM in Chicago, WIND 560AM in Chicago, and most Champaign area stations. Twenty-three newspapers are included along with Adams Outdoor Advertising in Champaign.
"We could not be more pleased with the tremendous response we've received from media outlets across the state," Assistant Athletics Director Chris Hanna said. "We believe this to be a very unique program that other schools around the nation will attempt to duplicate. We believe the messages from our student-athletes and coaches will resonate with young people and have a positive impact on our state. We would like to thank all of the participating outlets for spreading our positive messages and encourage other media outlets to join this important campaign."
The Fighting Illini have created billboards featuring football coach Ron Zook and men's basketball coach Bruce Weber. Television, radio, and newspaper PSAs have been created featuring a variety of Illinois coaches and student-athletes. The PSAs feature numerous topics including bullying, the importance of a quality education and healthy lifestyle values.
Brooke Buzard, a graduate assistant in the Illinois athletic marketing office and former Fighting Illini softball player, has led the statewide media outreach effort for Tough Enough, Smart Enough. She also has helped Illinois take the Fighting Illini Kids Club membership from 300 to more than 3,000 this year.
"As a former Fighting Illini student-athlete, I'm very proud of this campaign," Buzard said. "Tough Enough, Smart Enough brings to light our student-athletes' commitment to public service and the positive influence they have on our state. I know that when I was being recruited for college, this campaign would have made me feel very good about the University of Illinois and what it represents. Our student-athletes and coaches have embraced this campaign and I'm excited about the messaging they're sharing with young people throughout Illinois."
Media organizations that wish to participate in Tough Enough, Smart Enough can contact Buzard at 217-244-0016 or e-mail her at email@example.com. New public service announcement messages will be available soon.
