Each week the Illini in the NFL update will provide coverage on how former Fighting Illini football players fared during the previous week. In week 13, Rashard Mendenhall rushed for a season high, AJ Jenkins emerged with three catches and Whitney Mercilus got his sixth sack of the season.
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Arizona Cardinals - Despite not posting a touchdown in Sunday's road matchup against the Eagles, Mendenhall was able to record a season-high in rushing yards with 76 yards on 18 carries. The second-most rushing yards Mendenhall achieved this season came back in week two when he ran on the ground for 66 yards against Detroit. The Cardinals lost Sunday's game to the Eagles in Philadelphia 24-21.
AJ Jenkins, WR, Kansas City Chiefs - Jenkins emerged to capture a career high three catches from Alex Smith
for 35 yards, including a season-long 26-yard
catch down the left side of the field near the end of the fourth
quarter. The Chiefs lost at home to Denver, 35-28.
Whitney Mercilus, DE, Houston Texans - Mercilus posted his third straight multi-tackle game with a 3 tackle performance against New England. Mercilus was also credited with half of a sack on Tom Brady, increasing his season total sacks to six.
Corey Liuget, DE, San Diego Chargers - Liuget earned his 12th start of the season when he garnered three tackles in the Chargers 17-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in San Diego. He now has 32 tackles on the year.
Jeff Allen, OT, Jon Asamoah, OG, Kansas City Chiefs - Allen made his 11th start of the season and Asamoah made an appearance in the game for the Chiefs as the two lineman led the way for Chiefs' RB Jamaal Charles to record his third-most rushing yards of the season with 93 yards on 19 rushes. The Chiefs 35-28 loss to the Broncos on Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium marks a three-game losing streak for the Chiefs, who had been undefeated prior to their week 10 bye.
Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - Thomas played in Monday night's game against the Seahawks, but the Saints' offense didn't find a solution in Seattle. Pierre Thomas tallied only 4 carries for zero yards along with 4 receptions for 21 yards. The Saints fell to the Seahawks in Seattle 7-34.
David Diehl, OG, New York Giants - Diehl picked up his eighth straight start of the season to contribute to the Giants 24-17 win over the Redskins in Washington. Watch Diehl protect Eli Manning for a 22-yard touchdown pass to TE Brandon Myers.
Alan Ball, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars - Ball received his 11th start of the 2013 season in the Jaguars 32-28 win over the Browns in Cleveland. Ball contributed two tackles and was credited with one broken up pass in the Jaguars win.
Vontae Davis, CB, Indianapolis Colts - Davis continued his 12-game streak of starting at CB for the Colts in their 22-14 win over the Titans in Indianapolis. Davis recorded four combined tackles for the Colts defense, which held the Titans to two touchdowns. Davis now has 38 total tackles on the year.
Hugh Thornton, OL, Indianapolis Colts - Thornton obtained his tenth start at left guard for the Colts in their win over the Titans. Watch Thornton help push the pile at the Titans goal line to lead RB Donald Brown into the end zone.
Akeem Spence, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Spence earned his 10th start of the season when he contributed one tackle in the Buccaneers 27-6 loss to the Panthers in Carolina. It marked his fifth straight game with a tackle.
Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Weatherford had yet another successful outing for the Giants in Sunday's win over the Redskins. Weatherford punted six times and recorded a 47.8-yard average, slightly above his 47.3-yard season average. What's more impressive, Weatherford pinned the Redskins inside their own 20-yard line on two separate occasions.
Tavon Wilson, FS, New England Patriots - Appeared in his ninth game on the season for the Patriots, but did not record any stats in their 34-31 win over the Texans.
Tony Pashos, OL, Oakland Raiders - Started in his eighth game on the season and third game since he came back from his injury in the Raiders 31-24 loss to the Cowboys in Dallas.
Michael Buchanan, DE, New England Patriots - Had one tackle in the Patriots' 34-31 win over the Texans.
Martez Wilson, LB, Dallas Cowboys - Wilson signed with the Cowboys over the holiday week but did not appear in Thursday's game for Dallas when they beat the Raiders 31-24.
Glenn Foster, DL, New Orleans Saints - Was inactive for the Saints Monday night game against Seattle due to injury.
