Weekly Update Archive | Illini in the NFL Website

Each week the Illini in the NFL update will provide coverage on how former Fighting Illini football players fared during the previous week. In week 8, Offensive linemen Jeff Allen and Jon Asamoah moved the Chiefs to 8-0, Pierre Thomas rushed for a season high in his third start for the Saints and Glenn Foster picked up his second sack of the season.

Jeff Allen, OT, Jon Asamoah, OG, Kansas City Chiefs - Allen and Asamoah both started in their seventh respective games of the 2013 season as the Chiefs defeated the Cleveland Browns 23-17. Yet again, the duo led the Kansas City offensive line as the Chiefs racked up 136 yards on the ground in 29 attempts. Starting the season with an 8-0 record, the Chiefs are now just one win short of tying the best start in franchise history of nine consecutive victories occurring in 2003. Watch Jeff Allen pull around and give a nice block on this 17 yard run.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - Coming off of a bye week, Thomas made his third start of the 2013 season when the Saints defeated the Buffalo Bills at home, 35-17. Thomas rushed for a season high 65 yards on 14 carries in addition to snagging three passes for 29 total receiving yards. Thomas has now seen his rushing yards increase three games in a row.

Jeff Cumberland, TE, New York Jets - Cumberland made his seventh start on the season for the Jets as he reeled in one reception for a nine-yard gain. Cumberland was only targeted twice by Jets QB Geno Smith in their week 8 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, 49-9. Cumberland also suffered a mild concussion during Sunday's loss.

Glenn Foster, DL, New Orleans Saints - Appeared in his fifth consecutive game in his rookie season during the Saints' victory over the Bills. Foster recorded two quarterback hurries and one sack, marking his fourth tackle and second sack of the 2013 season.

Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Weatherford punted five times for an average of 43.8 yards in the Giants' 15-7 victory over the Eagles. Weatherford successfully pinned the Eagles inside their own 20 on three separate punts. In addition, Weatherford punted a season best long of 68 yards.

Akeem Spence, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Spence made his fourth consecutive start, fifth overall, in the Bucs 31-13 loss at home to the Carolina Panthers. For the second game this season, Spence did not record a tackle.

David Diehl, OT, New York Giants - Started in his fifth consecutive game this season when the Giants defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on the road 15-7. The Giants offensive line only allowed one sack.

Alan Ball, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars - Ball made his seventh start on the season in the Jaguars 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the tough home loss, Ball recorded three tackles and was credited for breaking up two pass attempts.

Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, New England Patriots - Despite making the start for New England in their 27-17 win over the Miami Dolphins, Hoomanawanui finished the game without any catches.

Michael Buchanan, DE, New England Patriots - Buchanan played in the home victory over the Dophins, but did not record any tackles for the second straight week.

Tavon Wilson, FS, New England Patriots - Appeared in his first game since week 4 due to a hamstring injury, but did not record any statistics in the Patriots victory over the Dolphins.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Arizona Cardinals - Mendenhall did not participate in any practices heading into the week 8 game and was ruled inactive for Sunday's win against the Falcons due to a toe injury. Mendenhall has 281 rushing yards in the 2013 season.

Mikel Leshoure, RB, Detroit Lions - Leshoure was listed as inactive for the sixth time in eight games. Detroit won 31-30 at home over the Dallas Cowboys.

Tony Pashos, OL, Oakland Raiders - Did not play in week 8 due to a hip injury sustained in week 6 against Kansas City.
