Each week the Illini in the NFL update will provide coverage on how former Fighting Illini football players fared during the previous weeks. Sacks were the name of the game in week four as Whitney Mercilus, Corey Liuget, Martez Wilson and Michael Buchanan were all able to get to the quarterback at least once. In addition, Vontae Davis notched his first interception of the season for the Colts and Jeff Cumberland had a 34-yard TD catch for the Jets.

Vontae Davis, CB, Indianapolis Colts - Davis made his presence known against the Jaguars on Sunday, recording three tackles and two pass defections. Davis also reeled in his first interception of the season.


Whitney Mercilus, DE, Houston Texans - Mercilus posted a monster day for the Texans, recording a career high six tackles and 2.5 sacks. Here's Mercilus hitting Russell Wilson for sack No. 1sack No. 2 and combining for a third sack.

Corey LiugetDE, San Diego Chargers - Liuget had a big game against Dallas, recording a season high five tackles, including his first sack of the season, taking down Romo for a eight-yard loss.

Jeff Cumberland, TE, New York Jets - Cumberland started in his third game of the season and continued to excel in the rejuvenated Jets passing game, catching his first touchdown of the season on a 34-yard reception from Geno Smith.

Michael Buchanan, DE, New England Patriots - Buchanan tallied a career best two tackles and also got in on the Illini sack party in week 4, taking down Matt Ryan for a nine-yard loss.


Martez Wilson, LB, New Orleans Saints - Wilson made the most of his playing time on Monday Night football, recording his first sack of the season and fifth in his NFL career.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - Primarily used as a receiver in Monday night's win over the Dolphins, Thomas gained 37 yards on five receptions but just one yard on four carries. Thomas now has 111 total receiving yards on the season.

Hugh Thornton, OL, Indianapolis Colts - Thornton started in his second straight game for the Colts as Indianapolis piled up 437 total yards, including 154 on the ground. In addition, the Jaguars could only muster just two sacks on quarterback Andrew Luck. Watch Thornton pick up a key block here to set up Donald Brown's 50-yard run.

Jeff Allen, OT, Jon Asamoah, OG, Kansas City Chiefs - Asomoah started in his third straight game while Allen sat out nursing a groin injury. The Chiefs once again accumulated over 100 yards rushing while allowing just one sack on the day. Chiefs move to 4-0 for the first time since 2003. Watch #73 Asamoah help create a huge lane for Jamaal Charles on this 24 yard run.

Akeem Spence, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Spence started in his first game since week one and produced two tackles to bring his rookie season total to nine.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Arizona Cardinals - Mendenhall had 12 carries for 21 rushing yards and three catches on four targets for 13 receiving yards Sunday in Arizona's 13-10 win over Tampa Bay.

Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Weatherford punted a season high eight times for an average of 49.9 yards. His longest punt of the day went 59 yards.

Alan Ball, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars - Ball returned to the playing field this week where he started and added three tackles to bring his season total to 14. Jaguars lost to the Colts 37-3.

Glenn Foster, DL, New Orleans Saints - Foster played in his second straight game and tallied his second tackle of the season. 

Tony Pashos, OL, Oakland Raiders - Pashos has started in all four games for the Raiders this season. The Raiders O-line struggled in their 24-14 loss to the Redskins, surrendering seven sacks.

AJ Jenkins, WR, Kansas City Chiefs - Jenkins played in Sunday's 31-7 rout over the Giants but did not record a catch.

Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, New England Patriots - Hoomanawanui started in his third game of the season, but did not get on the stat sheet.

Tavon Wilson, FS, New England Patriots - Tavon Wilson did not participate in any snaps in the Patriots win in Atlanta.

David Diehl, OT, New York Giants - Diehl, who has yet to play this season due to injury, made strides this past week, participating in practice and even suiting up on Sunday for the Giants. Diehl should be ready to go for next week's game.

Mikel Leshoure, RB, Detroit Lions - Leshoure was inactive Sunday against the Bears as Reggie Bush returned to the backfield.

Arrelious Benn, WR, Philadelphia Eagles - Out for season with torn left ACL suffered during training camp.

Kelvin Hayden, CB, Chicago Bears - Out for season with a torn left hamstring suffered in early August.

Graham Pocic, OL, St. Louis Rams - Out for season is injury suffered during training camp.
