Hein-Blog Photo Size.jpgThree Illini swimmers--Cara Chuang, Stephanie Hein and Erica Lynn--are teaming up to give fans an inside look at the Illinois swimming and diving program. In the third edition, Stephanie Hein talks about last weekend's 2-1 finish, vocal abilities of her teammates, and birthdays. She even manages to rib assistant coach Alec Hayden for the third blog in a row. The Illini will host the first home dual event of the year on Friday night at 6 p.m. against Illinois State at the ARC Pool. Admission is free, so we'll see you there.

Greetings Orange and Blue fanatics!

Another two weeks of the swim season have come and gone and with them a couple wins, a loss, and many laughs.

The team traveled to East Lansing for a tri-meet against conference competitor Michigan State and Liberty University. It was a nail-bitter to the finish but the Illini walked away victorious. The Orange and Blue produced many fast times but the standout race came from the trio of Sarah, Gabbie, and Lori who swept the 200 fly in an exciting 1-2-3 finish.

The next morning, in a disappointing 180 from the night before, the team fell short to the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University. Despite the loss, the Illini distance swimmers were the stars of the meet. Kayla, Chuk, and Alyssa finished 1-2-3 in the 1000 free while Court, Chuk, MB, and Alyssa comfortably swept the 500 in a 1-2-3-4 finish.

The close victory against MSU and LU showed the team that anything is possible when everyone strives for a common goal while the loss against OU served as a reminder of the hard work that still needs to be done.

The rumor on the pool deck is Coach Alec hopes to continue his streak of blog-post shout-outs so here it goes. In a failed attempt at a joke, Coach Alec threatened to cap the team's breadstick consumption at two per person during the trek to East Lansing. Unfortunately for Coach Alec, the Illini swimmers take food rations seriously and the perceived threat was questioned multiple times. Coach Alec was indeed joking and the team enjoyed unlimited breadsticks to their heart's (and stomach's) content.

The team kept busy while waiting for dinner one night with a game of Telephone. Court started the chain with a quip about the Chief and Sparty. In the middle of the game, the phrase transformed into "teeth and eyes fell out of a tree and hit Subby on the head." Thirty swimmers and divers later, the message finished with "Keith and I fell out of a tree and hit Subby in the head." No one knows who Keith is or how Subby managed to stand under the tree at the exact moment he fell, but it made for some good laughs.

Long bus rides bring out the inner-choir in the team. The medley of songs on the trip to Michigan included Cara and Sarah's rendition of Mulan favorites, Erica and MB's harmonizing of the national anthem, and the whole team's off-key belting of Hilary Duff and Shakira.

The team celebrated Lori's highly anticipated 20th birthday with a trip to Biaggi's (another outing that included unlimited bread). Lori's birthDAY usually turns into a birthMONTH so Cocomero will probably be receiving a few visits from the Illini swimmers in the near future.

Come out to the ARC Pool Friday at 6 p.m. and watch us take on Illinois State. It's our first home dual meet of the season. Admission is free!

See you there,
