Each week the Illini in the NFL update will provide coverage on how former Fighting Illini football players fared during the previous weeks. In week two action, Rashard Mendenhall scored the game-winning TD for the Cardinals, Michael Buchanan recorded his first career sack and linemen Jeff Allen and Jon Asamoah helped pave the way for the Chiefs surprising 2-0 start.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Arizona Cardinals - Mendenhall ran for a game-high 66 yards on 15 carries and caught two passes for 28 yards in Sunday's 25-21 win over Detroit. Mendenhall's one-yard touchdown run with two minutes remaining erased a two-point deficit and gave Arizona their first win of the season. 


Michael Buchanan, DE, New England Patriots - Buchanan delivered his first career NFL sack and the first for the New England Patriots last Thursday night. Buchanan tackled New York's Geno Smith for a negative six yards to force a fourth down punting situation. Patriots won 13-10 at home over the Jets.

Alan Ball, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars - Ball fought through a groin injury and matched his career high of seven tackles. Jaguars lost 19-9 to the Oakland Raiders.

Whitney Mercilus, DE, Houston Texans - Mercilus recorded three tackles in yet another late thrilling Texans victory as Houston defeated Tennessee 30-24 in overtime.

Jeff Allen, OT, Kansas City Chiefs - Allen once again started at guard where the Chiefs offensive line propelled the squad to 313 total net yards including 114 on the ground.

Jon Asamoah, OG, Kansas City Chiefs - Asamoah started in his first game of the season after missing last due to a nagging calf injury. The Chiefs bested the Cowboys 17-16 and are off to a great turnaround start at 2-0.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - Despite fewer carries than both Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram, Thomas still led the team in rushing (29 yards) and averaged a solid 5.9 yards per carry. The Saints defeated the Buccaneers 16-14.

Tony Pashos, OL, Oakland Raiders - Pashos started in his second consecutive game for the Raiders as Oakland defeated Jacksonville 19-9 for their first win of the season. The Raiders offensive line dictated the game, accumulating 226 yards in the rushing game. Coach Allen after Sunday's said, "I think when somebody goes down to an injury other guys have to be able to step up. I think both Khalif and Pashos have been able to step up and do a nice job for us."

Hugh Thornton, OL, Indianapolis Colts - After left guard Donald Thomas suffered a season-ending injury during the Colts loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, Hugh Thornton stepped in and received plenty of playing time. Thornton is expected to make his first start against the 49ers next week.

Vontae Davis, CB, Indianapolis Colts - Davis once again started at corner for the Colts and notched three tackles as Indianapolis dropped to the visiting Miami Dolphins.

Corey Liuget, DE, San Diego Chargers - Liuget registered his second straight start of the season and but added just one tackle to his resume as he opposed the Jason Peters and Evan Mathis of the Eagles. Chargers downed Philadelphia 33-30.

Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Weatherford punted five times for an average of 46.2 and a long of 50 yards. He also pinned the Broncos down inside their own 20 once.

Akeem Spence, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Spence stepped in for injured tackle Derek Landri and recorded one tackle in Tampa Bay's last minute loss to New Orleans, 16-14.

Martez Wilson, LB, New Orleans Saints - Wilson saw his first action of the 2013 season after missing week one due to an elbow injury. Wilson recorded two tackles in the Saints 16-14 win at Tampa Bay. Due to lack of depth at defensive line, Wilson also saw some action at the defensive end position in four-man fronts.

Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, New England Patriots - Hoomanawanui started in his second straight game for the Patriots but failed to reel in a single catch.

AJ Jenkins, WR, Kansas City Chiefs - Jenkins suited up for his second consecutive game with the Chiefs in their 17-16 win over the Cowboys, but failed to get on the stat sheet. 

Tavon Wilson, FS, New England Patriots - Tavon Wilson once again saw some playing time on the field with the Patriots but did not register a stat as he still serves as the primary sub for Devin McCourty. Patriots won 13-10 over the Jets.

Jeff Cumberland, TE, New York Jets - Cumberland played in his second game of the season but did not record a catch as he is used primarily for blocking situations.

Glenn Foster, DL, New Orleans Saints - Foster did not make the trip to Tampa Bay after not participating in practice Thursday and Friday due to an ankle injury.

David Diehl, OT, New York Giants - Diehl was ruled out of Sunday's game after undergoing surgery on his right thumb four weeks prior. He is expected to miss 2-3 more weeks.

Mikel Leshoure, RB, Detroit Lions - Leshoure was once again inactive for the Lions game at Arizona on Sunday. Cardinals won 25-21.

Former Illini on Injured Reserve

Arrelious Benn, WR, Philadelphia Eagles - Out for season with torn left ACL suffered during training camp.

Kelvin Hayden, CB, Chicago Bears - Out for season with a torn left hamstring suffered in early August.

Graham Pocic, OL, St. Louis Rams - Out for season is injury suffered during training camp.
