After eight days in Rantoul, the Illini returned to Champaign Tuesday for the remainder of training camp. They conducted a final set of special teams and position meetings at Camp Rantoul before busing back to campus and treating the day's practice as an 11 a.m. game.
As a result, the team went through a high-intensity scrimmage that also included a halftime and postgame instructions. As the players jogged out of the tunnel and onto Zuppke Field, many of them touched the Grange Rock, which honors college football's greatest player, Illini legend Red Grange.
Following practice, athletic director Mike Thomas addressed the team on the values of teamwork and leadership. And in addition to our regular group of media, CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler made the trip to Champaign to watch practice and chat with Coach Beckman, offensive coordinator Bill Cubit and quarterbacks Nathan Scheelhaase and Wes Lunt.
llinois moves into preparation for Southern Illinois on Wednesday, with another midday practice.
