Hey there Illini fans!
I hope you all have been doing well because the Illini Gymnastics team has been having the time of our lives! I'm sure you all know but last weekend was the best weekend of my life. We made it to the National Championships for the 3rd time in school history! You could say our team is excited but that would be an understatement because we are more than thrilled!
I am so proud of every one of the girls on the team. We stuck to the plan, believed in each other and just got the job done. What can I say, that's how the Illini do it right?! We get the job done. But thinking about that moment after Alina nailed her beam routine still gives me the chills and brings tears to my eyes. I remember I looked at Jordan, gave her the biggest hug and just cried and cried tears of joy. Check out all the highlights here.
All our hard work and dedication has paid off and we are hungry to do even better at National's. Just because we made it, doesn't mean were done! It means we have that much more to prove and we are ready for it. These past few days have been focused on perfecting each little skill and executing our routines to the best of our abilities. The Illini are ready to take on the best teams in the nation!
This coming Wednesday we will be taking off to the always lovely California to compete at Pauley Pavillion at UCLA. We will be competing on Friday April 19th, at 12 o clock Pacific Time so make sure to follow us! For those of you who you don't know, UCLA is only about a 50 minute drive from my home so competing near my hometown will be one of the greatest moments ever. My family and friends will all be coming and it's so exciting to have them in attendance to support both myself and the team. It just makes this competition that much more special and I can't wait to be out there.
I'm also excited to show my teammates my home state! Many girls have never been there so I will be there personal tour guide! Since it's been cold here in Champaign, IL, I'm hoping to catch some nice warm weather in California. This cold weather has been hitting me hard and I just miss the sun!
I would also like to congratulate University of Michigan and the University of Minnesota for qualifying to NCAA's. Three Big Ten school's competing at NCAA Nationals is such a wonderful thing for our conference and it will be great having those two teams there with us.
As always, thank you for all the love and support! We would be lost without you all! GO ILLINI!
Love always, Sunny Kato
