Hi Illini nation!!
We have just returned from our first full-field tournament in Peoria, Ariz., at the Westbrook Invitational. We were so excited to kick off the spring season at this tournament, and it doesn't hurt that we left Champaign right after our first snowfall of the winter for sunny skies in Arizona. We arrived in Peoria on Friday evening and Sam Postillion picked a pretty awesome Mexican place for dinner. Afterwards we went to our host families. I stayed with Ember this weekend, and our host mom was the greatest. As soon as we walked in the door she had homemade hot cocoa ready for us and made us an amazing breakfast before the practice round.
During the tournament, we had several individual successes. Crystal Smith carded a 72 during her first round which launched her to a career low tournament score and personal-best individual finish. Pimploy Thirati had her first eagle as a collegiate player!! She hit the par five 8th green in two and knocked her putt in for a three. She and I finished in the top 30, both carding our low 54-hole tournaments in college. Michelle Mayer also shot her low 54-hole total, posting a college career best 74 on the final day.
As a team, we didn't achieve the goals we had set, but our play on the last day was our best of the tournament and season low round which is something we can build upon heading into the Clover Cup next week. We are so excited to start up this season, and can't wait for the continued improvement and progress this spring!!
Keep an eye out for us next week as we go back to Arizona for the Clover Cup!! GO ILLINI!!
