Hey Illini fans!
It's been an exciting past two weeks here in Champaign! After our meet against Michigan, we were all extremely excited to get back in the gym and work hard for our first home meet against Michigan State! Many of us made signs and hung them around our dorms and in the dining hall to inform fans about the exciting weekend ahead of us. As well as it being our first home meet, it was also our Breast Cancer awareness meet, so we got to wear pink leos, pink ribbons and pink tattoos to raise the awareness for breast cancer. We also had a couple girls walk along side us at the beginning of the meet whose moms are battling cancer. It was such a powerful thing to see all of our fans wearing pink as it gave everyone hope that we can fight to find a cure.
We had a huge crowd show up to cheer us on and the energy inside Huff Hall was tremendous. We started off on vault and the excitement kept building from there. The fans even kept up our new cheer - when someone sticks a dismount they all yell, "And that's another Fighting Illini... STUCK DISMOUNT." We loved it and the crowd got super into it. There's nothing greater than a loud crowd!! We finished off the meet with our current highest All Around score of a 196.125 (Pink Meet Video Highlights). Following the meet, head coach Kim Landrus, had a special presentation in honor of a former Illini's mother who had recently passed away from cancer. It was an emotional moment for all of us, but it brought us peace knowing that we competed in honor of women who have fought and continue to fight cancer.
Following the meet against Michigan State, we had a quick turn-around for another meet on Friday against Nebraska. We had a couple mistakes, but that only made us want to come back in the gym and work even harder for our upcoming meet against another Big Ten team, Minnesota.
The team is extremely excited to be going against the Gophers on Saturday for another Big Ten matchup and look forward to showing all of you how much our hard work is paying off! Our next home meet is February 16th against the Iowa Hawkeyes! We hope all of you will come out to Huff Hall on the 16th at 4 pm to cheer us on!
