The Illini went through the only two-a-day practice of Camp Rantoul on Saturday and enjoyed an unseasonably cool day.
After the morning practice, Mike Svetina became the next newcomer to lose his helmet stripe, and Devin Church lost his stripe after the evening practice. Svetina's Illini big brother, Henry Dickinson, and Church's, Ryan Lankford, each helped them remove their stripes and attach it to the dry-erase board, where each newcomer signed it.
As we first wrote Thursday, Illini newcomers have a single white stripe on their practice helmets. If the coaching staff deems them worthy, newcomers can earn their way to being "de-striped" through hard work during training camp. The action signifies that the player is no longer being considered a newcomer to the team.
Newcomers who have been "de-striped" (in order of de-striping)
Tommy Davis - 8/9
Dami Ayoola - 8/10
Mike Svetina - 8/11 morning
Devin Church - 8/11 afternoon
The Illini wrap up their week at Camp Rantoul on Sunday with a morning practice before returning to Champaign for the team's media day at 2:30 p.m. and Fan Appreciation Day at 5 p.m. Illini fans are encouraged to meet the coaches and players on the field at Memorial Stadium from 5-6, where they can take photos and get autographs while walking on the field's new turf. Admission and parking, which will be in the northwest lot of Assembly Hall, are free. Fans can enter the west side of Memorial Stadium starting at 4:45 p.m.
