Gill-Gray-Smile_0125.jpgGet behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 12th edition, junior Elise Gill looks back at the State of Illinois Classic, recaps the team's spring break week and talks about the upcoming Big Ten Championships.

Hi Illini Fans!

Last weekend at the State of Illinois Classic we posted our season high of 196.15 from our previous 195.775, which was super exciting! We took home every event title and achieved a 49 plus on three out of the four events.  We had so much fun at this meet! Almost all of the parents came out to support us as it was our last meet at Huff Hall this season (but, we'll be back in Champaign one more time in 2012 as we host NCAA Regionals at Assembly Hall!).

On Monday we found out that Kelsey, Alina, and Amber all received All-Big Ten honors. Alina and Amber received second-team All-Big ten honors, which mean they are one of the top six performers on at least one event or the all-around in the Big Ten. Kelsey was one of the seven gymnasts awarded with first-team all-Big Ten honors because she is ranked in the top three on at least one event or the all-around in the conference.

This week is spring break which means we pretty much have the whole campus to ourselves. On Sunday, most of the men's and women's teams met out on the main quad to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather and toss a frisbee around. As for practices, we've had them in the afternoons this week to help prepare for the Big Ten Championships this Saturday in Iowa. We are leaving on Thursday afternoon and are super excited. Friday is our practice day in the arena followed by the Big Ten banquet. Everyone is looking forward to dressing up in our traditional orange and blue! We are the sixth seed for the competition which means we start on floor in the afternoon session at 1:00 pm.  Big Tens is one of the most exciting meets of the year because we get to compete against all of our rivals at once and there's always a big crowd with lots of energy.   If you can't make it LIVE, be sure to tune into the Big Ten Network as they will be airing both sessions of the Championships LIVE.

Hope you enjoyed this week's Illini ink!

Stay posted for next week and GO ILLINI!!!
