The last two weeks have been extremely busy here on campus! It all started with a double meet weekend against Michigan State and later on Arizona State. The Michigan State meet was sure to be exciting because we of the traveling trophy, the Victory Plank, between the two schools. Additionally, it was our annual "Pink Meet" and we got new leotards this year and couldn't wait to support breast cancer awareness in every way possible. We also wore pink ribbon tattoos instead of our typical Illinois tattoo to show our full support for the cause. During the competition, Elise Gill, a junior on the team, won her very first career event title by receiving a 9.825 on floor. We were all very proud of Elise and excited that her hard work is paying off! After a close competition throughout, it came down to a tie between Michigan State and your Fighting Illini with a team score of 195.175. Although the Spartans took the Victory Plank home this year, we can't wait to get another shot at it next season!
Bright and early Saturday morning, we went to the airport and flew to Tempe, Arizona to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. Coming off of a tie with Michigan State, we really wanted to show ASU what competition we had brought to Tempe from Champaign. Kelsey Joannides, a senior on the team, hit a 9.9 on beam securing her season-high all-around score of a 39.350! Also Alina Weinstein, a junior Illini, had a great meet tying for second place all-around with a 39.225! We really came together as a team out in Arizona and couldn't wait to bring the same energy back to Kenney Gym for practice the next week!
After the busy weekend, our team participated in Jock Jams, a student-athlete talent show put on by SAAC, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. This annual talent show raises money for a variety of charities each year. This year we sang "For the Longest Time" by Billy Joel hoping to top our Hannah Montana "Everyone Makes Mistakes" routine from last year. Even though I wasn't able to make the performance, I heard it was a blast! The Men's Gymnastics Team took the cake with a synchronized swimming and surfing skit that had the crowd cracking up! We really enjoyed raising money for these charities in such a fun way!
Then it was off to UIC for an in-state showdown competition. Although, the meet did not go as planned, we are putting the past behind us and moving on to what is sure to be a great competition against the University of Kentucky this Friday. It is our annual Gym Jam and Senior Day so that always adds a little special touch to the evening. Come out and support us and cheer your Illini to victory!
Hope you enjoyed reading another week of Illini Ink!
Stay tuned in for next week and GO ILLINI!!
