Lucas_Westbrook6.JPGGet behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with Chip Shots, the online blog update for the squad. In this season's seventh edition, senior Nora Lucas reflects on the team's record-setting performance at the Westbrook Spring Invitational and her first career tournament victory. Be sure to also take a look at the photos from the Westbrook Village Golf Course.

Last week the team and I headed down to Peoria, AZ to compete in our first full field event. The Westbrook Spring Invitational was hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Westbrook Village Golf Course. We were fortunate enough to stay on the golf course with our private housing and cannot thank the Boyd and Mason families enough.  After our arrival on Friday night, we grabbed a quick dinner in Scottsdale and headed to our housing. We were welcomed with open arms, warm beds, and most importantly a endless supply of water, jelly beans, and peanut butter filled pretzels!

The next day we had a great practice round and were able to get our game plans set and after the round we enjoyed a great dinner hosted by our host families where we were able to catch up with one another as well as some family members that live close to the area. Katie's parents and Hailey's brother were able to come to dinner and we had some good laughs and heard some funny family stories! We as a team were blown away with all the volunteers at the start of the round on Sunday and cannot thank Westbrook Village enough for having us there and wanted to thank not only the volunteers but all of the staff for all their hard work for preparing everything. I have played in a lot of junior tournaments, amateur events and college events but this event ranks pretty high on the level of professionalism and organization. Obviously the next two days were very fun and enjoyable and it was great to walk away with a win!

In addition, this past week has been a whirlwind! We as a team have received a wealth of congratulations from our peers, family, and all of our supporters for our most recent tournament victory and record shattering performance. It was very exciting to start the spring season out on such a good note and what we accomplished was incredible, but in reality it was not incredible. I am not sure if anyone saw the Heisman Trophy presentation but when Robert Griffin III received the award and gave his speech he was quoted saying that it was incredible that he was standing there but really it was not because of all the hard work he had done in the year leading up to the award presentation. In so many words, RGIII made it clear that he had set out on a path of total commitment to being the best college football player and I think our team can relate to this football star's words. After our fall season, we were not happy with the way things ended and over break we came together as team and committed ourselves to one common goal. Since then we as a team have worked extremely hard in practice, the classroom, and in the weight room and so to me it was no surprise to see where we finished. We as a team know that there are no guarantees in life or on the course, but we will continue to work hard and can't wait to see what the spring season brings us!

Go Illini!
