Naleway-Gray-Smile_0139.jpgGet behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 10th edition, freshman Jordan Naleway looks back at the start of the season, including the team's mall marathons, and previews the team's upcoming meet against Ohio State set for Saturday on the Big Ten Network.

Hey Illini Fans!
It's hard for me to believe that we already have three meets under our belt, but as the saying goes, time flies when you're having fun! It has been a blast seeing all of our hard work during preseason pay off when we hosted Minnesota and traveled to Iowa and Michigan.  Everyone was amped up for Michigan, and as a team, we nailed our first three rotations.  We began the night on bars, where anticipation grew with stuck dismount after stuck dismount. Junior Alina Weinstein ultimately ended up winning the all-around crown with a personal best of 39.40 and was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. We arrived back home just in time on Saturday to watch our men's team dominate in a tri-meet against Oklahoma and Michigan! This energy and excitement lingers in the gym as we prepare to take on Ohio State Saturday at 3pm in Huff Hall!  We are thrilled that this meet will be shown live on the Big Ten Network!
The start of season brings with it the start of the spring semester.  Everyone has been busy with the first few weeks of classes.  We all get a much-needed break from the stress of our studies during our team's favorite past time - the mall.  The morning of our away meets, we scout out the malls and find the best deals and cutest clothes. In addition to our homework, reading assignments, and mall marathons, we've had some uncharacteristic warm weather.  Those who didn't quite want allergy season yet, though, were relieved to find out that the groundhog saw his shadow.  This can only mean six more weeks of winter weather here in Champaign!
The weather may be up and down, but our attitudes are set on paying attention to perfecting the little details in the gym.  The last few days of practice have been especially encouraging and productive, since we've really united together, hit our sets, and had a ton of fun screaming for each other during team assignments.  Our focus will be on the process and we can't wait for an electrifying competition on Saturday!
Thanks for reading!
