Illini in the NFL - Super Bowl Champions

Diehl-Super Bowl.jpgTwo former Illini, offensive lineman David Diehl and punter Steve Weatherford, helped lead the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday night. Diehl, who was also part of the 2008 Giants Super Bowl team, won his second career championship while Weatherford earned his first-ever Super Bowl ring.

Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Became the first punter in Super Bowl history to pin a team inside their own 10-yard line three times, including his first one that led to this safety on the Patriots' first play. In total, he punted four times, averaging 40.8 yards, and held for a pair of Lawrence Tynes field goals.

In addition to Diehl an Weatherford, former Illini running back Kameno Bell also earned a Super Bowl ring as one of the Giants' team physicians.
