My last fall season is in the books, and I cannot believe it! Starting off the season to a record breaking team score and 2nd place finish was one of many successes we had this fall. After Colorado we headed to Kentucky where Sammi Sloan contended for the individual title. Although she did not win the event, she left feeling very motivated knowing that her game was in a place to contend for a victory. Our team finished in the top half of the field and prepared ourselves for tough conditions that we may face in the spring. Then we headed straight to French Lick for the Big Ten preview event. We were able to get a good feel for the course and prepare ourselves for a victory at the Big Ten Championship this spring. After a brief break we headed to Pete Dye's masterpiece, Crooked Stick. Hailey contended for the individual title, while the team competed for the team title. Although we came up short, we still had a 3rd place finish and had a better idea of what to work on. In our last event in North Carolina, we had a second place finish and two top-10 finishes by Sammi and Jackie.
After Rory Mclory won the US Open there was an ad that ran in European papers that had a picture of him with the headline, "Own your defeats, and you will be defined by your victories." Although, our season didn't end in any wins, it has motivated us to own our mistakes and to work harder to be ready for the championship spring season. We had many great highlights in our season, but as Illini nation knows we will never be satisfied unless we emerge victorious.
With first semester almost over and Christmas around the corner, I cannot believe how fast things have gone! After our last event in North Carolina we headed straight into off season training. The NCAA allows eight hours a week to workout and get together for team meetings. For the last two weeks we have been pushing ourselves in the weight room and in cycling, pilates or core classes. We are looking forward to being in superior shape by the time we head into out spring season. With more time on our own we have had time to focus on our school work and community service events that we are involved in. We look forward to a successful spring season and wish all Illini fans a very healthy and happy holiday season!
