Every year a banquet is held to honor all graduating University of Illinois athletes. This scholar banquet is held at Assembly Hall for around 500 people, including student-athletes, coaches, staff, family and community members. Academic awards are given to student-athletes who have performed at a high level at the University of Illinois while they were a student-athlete. The Fighting Illini Newcomer of the Year is awarded to the best male and female athlete performing in his/her first year of competition at Illinois.

The Fighting Illini Spirit Award is awarded to the male and female who exemplify the spirit, courage and dedication of the Fighting Illini. An Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award is awarded to the male and female athlete with the highest grade point average in sophomore, junior and senior classes. Outstanding Team GPA Awards are awarded to teams with the highest cumulative GPA. The Dike Eddelman Athlete of the Year Award is awarded to the female and male student-athlete who have distinguished themselves in athletic achievement.

    Chi Alpha Sigma

Chi Alpha Sigma, "Excellence in Academics and Athletics," is the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society. Nick Mourouzis, head football coach at DePauw University, started this society in 1996. In order to be inducted into the honor society, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior, have earned a varsity letter in their sport, and achieved a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA. In addition, the society promotes good moral character, citizenship, and leadership. All levels of competition are represented in the honor society, from Division I, II and III as well as NAIA institutions. Once initiated, new members will receive a certificate and be recognized at the Scholar Athlete Banquet. Inductions are held once a year in the spring.
