Douglas C. Roberts CHAMPS/Life Skills Program

All University of Illinois student-athletes participate in the Douglas C. Roberts CHAMPS/Life Skills program. CHAMPS, which stands for CHallenging Athletic Minds for Personal Success, is designed by the NCAA to develop the student-athlete as a whole. It concentrates on five areas - academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development, career development, and community service.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program has been named in honor of Douglas C. Roberts for his generous endowment of the program.

Mr. Roberts endowment is directed toward enhancing the CHAMPS/Life Skills program curricula. These enhancements include the development and implementation of programs, workshops, and seminars. The funding will also provide fellowships to graduate students in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and will support student-athlete community outreach efforts through the Hometown Heroes Program.

Student-athlete support services that address the total needs of the individual are essential. Student-athletes are given the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success while on campus and in the future through the ILLINI CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois is dedicated to providing quality support services for all student-athletes through the Illini Life Skills Program. Balancing academics and athletics is challenging and requires effort. It is important for student-athletes to remember that the skills that have made them successful as athletes, such as commitment, discipline, determination, and hard work are also going to help them achieve academic, personal and professional success.

The Douglas C. Roberts CHAMPS/Life Skills program provides several workshops each semester. Most workshops are voluntary, but some student-athletes may be required to attend certain workshops. Freshmen are also required to attend "New-Student Meetings" at the beginning of their career at Illinois. The meetings cover such topics as time management, test taking skills, nutrition, personal finance, alcohol and drug awareness, and selecting a major. Examples of upperclassmen programs include resume building and career development, finding internships, sexual responsibility, and much more.

COMMITMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Academic Counseling - A central mission of Academic Services at the University of Illinois is to promote the academic success of all student-athletes by providing quality support services. Each student-athlete has an athletic academic counselor who will assist them in finding a balance between academics, athletics, and personal growth. In addition, the athletic academic counselor can assist the student-athlete in designing an academic plan than will help to insure that progress toward a degree is continually being met.

Monitoring Academic Progress - Athletic Academic Counselors regularly meet with student-athletes to monitor their academic performance. Twice during each semester, academic progress reports are sent to the instructors of all student-athletes in an effort to gain additional information concerning their progress towards a degree.

Study Table Program - In an effort to ease the transition to college life and to insure academic success, student-athletes at the University of Illinois have supervised study table. Weekly study table requirements are set by team coaches and academic counselors.

Computer Access - The Irwin Academic Services Center is home to three computer labs equipped with computers, printers and scanners. These labs are solely for use by University of Illinois student-athletes. A fourth lab is located at the football stadium academic center. Lab monitors are available to assist student athletes with the use of the computers. Academic counselors also have laptops available for student-athletes to use when they are away from campus for athletic competition.

First Year Student-Athlete Meetings - All new student-athletes at the University of Illinois participate in a series of workshops held during their first weeks on campus to aid in their transition to college. Sessions on study skills such as note taking, test taking, writing essay exams or papers, time management, and communication with professors are provided. Other workshops, open to all student-athletes, are offered throughout the year. Student-athletes may request individual study skills sessions by contacting the Life Skills Coordinator.

The role of a tutor is to supplement study skills and assist in understanding course content and developing successful course strategies. Drop-in tutoring and review sessions prior to exams are offered for some of the more frequently taken courses.

COMMITMENT TO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

A fundamental component of the Illini Life Skills Program is fostering the development of personal growth in our student-athletes. In conjunction with individuals from the Counseling Center, McKinley Health Center, University Police and other campus units, Programming focuses on helping student-athletes develop healthy lifestyles while they are at the University of Illinois and habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Recent program topics have included: Alcohol Use and Abuse, Eating Disorders, Sexual Responsibility, and Communication and Relationships.

University of Illinois student-athletes have the opportunity to participate in the Health Advocates Program, a collaborative educational program of McKinley Health Center, Greek Affairs and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. Each athletic team has one or two Health Advocates who attend a weekly class where they are provided with the knowledge and skills to inform and educate their teammates on various health issues, to recommend campus resources, and make informed referrals.

COMMITMENT TO CAREER DEVELOPMENT

A major focus of the Illini Life Skills Program is preparing our student-athletes for life after college and the end of their intercollegiate athletic careers. The Athletic Career Services Program is designed to work closely with the university's Career Center to provide workshops to educate student-athletes about the job search process, provide networking opportunities, and to assist with job placement. Student-athletes are encouraged to participate as early as in their freshmen year in self-exploration workshops about career choices and to help them in choosing a major. Our goal is to help our student-athletes develop into individuals who will have rewarding careers and productive lives after they leave the University of Illinois.

Career workshop topics have included the following:

COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY SERVICE

Serving the community is another focus of the Illini Life Skills Program. Student-athletes are provided with an opportunity to serve our community and individuals who are in need through various projects. We hope to develop in them an appreciation for and a lifelong commitment to serving others.

Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) - This active organization consists of two student-athletes from each of the nineteen varsity athletic teams at the University of Illinois. The goals of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board include providing input on NCAA, Big Ten and University of Illinois policies regarding the welfare of student-athletes in the following ways:

  • Providing recommendations on how to improve student life within the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Meet, if necessary, with campus leaders on issues affecting students and community projects
  • Represent the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at various functions

The Student-Athlete Advisory Board has also taken a leadership role in organizing community service projects, such as the annual SAAB Clothing Drive and Fall Fun Fest.

Hometown Heroes - Hometown Heroes is a community outreach program that provides our student-athletes with opportunities to interact with youth from Champaign County while spreading a anti-drug, anti-gang and pro-Illini message. This program enables our student-athletes to develop their speaking skills while impacting the lives of others as they serve as role models for the youth of our community.

Reading Illini - This new outreach program, is designed to put our student-athletes in a position where they can promote the importance of education, and literacy in particular. Students-athletes work with elementary students one-one-one or in small groups, readings books, playing word games with a goal of helping students improving their reading skills and vocabulary in a positive, fun environment.

ILLINOIS LAUDED FOR CHAMPS PROGRAM

The 1A Athletic Directors' Association has named the University of Illinois as recipient of the CHAMPS Program of Excellence Award for 2005-06. A "Program of Excellence" is, in essence, a lifetime award designed to recognize Division 1A athletics programs that have established student-athlete welfare as the cornerstone of their operating principles.

"This is a terrific honor for the University of Illinois," said UI Director of Athletics Ron Guenther. "We put a lot of emphasis on developing the total student-athlete, and this is evidence that our energies are paying off. Our Academic Services staff, including Kathy Kaler and Tom Michael should be commended for their outstanding work with the program. Our coaching staff has bought into the program and has given it great support. We hope our program continues to grow." The CHAMPS/Life Skills program focuses on five commitments that each Division 1A program is making in the growth and development of student-athletes.
